2026 NORTHERN NEVADA STATE GIRLS SCHOLASTIC TOURNAMENT
INDIVIDUAL and TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS
and QUALIFIER to NEVADA STATE SCHOLASTIC GIRLS CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

Date: Sunday, April 19th, 2026 @ 12:00pm

IMPORTANT:  Both the Northern portion of the state (defined below) and the Southern portion of the state will hold separate Over-The-Board tournaments to determine individuals and the top team from each region who will then compete in the Nevada State Girls Scholastic Chess Championship to be held online on Sunday March 30th and the Nevada State Scholastic Chess Championship (teams) to be held online on Sunday April 26th, respectively.

Girls who reside in, or go to school in, the following Nevada counties will be eligible to participate in the Northern Nevada State Girls Scholastic Chess Championship: Washoe, Humbolt, Elko, Pershing, Storey, Churchill, Lander, Eureka, White Pine, Lyon, Douglas, Mineral and the independent city of Carson City.

This announcement is for the Northern Nevada State Girls Scholastic Chess Championship. The Southern Nevada State Girls Scholastic Chess Championship will be held on a different day and will be detailed in a separate announcement.

Please join or renew the player’s membership at www.uschess.org before registering for the tournament.

Girls must reside in Nevada or be a full-time student in grades K-12 at a Nevada school
and born after September 1, 2006.

K-12 Open Section (Open to all girls in grades K-12)
4 rounds
Time Control Game/25 minutes + 5 seconds
Round 1 begins at 12:00 noon

Prizes:

Individual Trophies and a Top Team Trophy will be awarded. All Players will receive a participation medal.

Qualifiers:

The top three individual scorers in the Northern Nevada Scholastic Girls Chess Championship will meet at the Lake Tahoe School on Sunday, April 26th to compete in the Nevada State Scholastic Girls Chess Championship (individuals), an online tournament that includes the Northern Nevada individual qualifiers and the Southern Nevada individual qualifiers. We will provide digital tablets for that tournament. The winner of that tournament will represent the State of Nevada at the 14th Annual WIM Ruth Haring National Tournament of Girls State Champions in Grand Rapids, MI from August 3-6th. The Nevada State representative will receive a travel stipend from Silver State Chess after completing all games in the national tournament without a forfeit loss.

The top team scorer in the Northern Nevada Scholastic Chess Championship will meet at the Lake Tahoe School on Saturday, April 26th to compete in the Nevada State Scholastic Chess Championship (teams), an online tournament that includes the Northern Nevada team qualifier and the Southern Nevada team qualifier. We will provide digital tablets for that tournament. The winning teams will not qualify for any national tournament because there is no national team tournament for which to qualify.

Additional Prizes:

The top scoring girl will receive free entry to the International Youth Championship in Las Vegas June 13-14th. Restricted to players born after June 14th, 2011 and rated under 1800.

If that player won an entry in the Northern Nevada Scholastic Open Championship on April 18th, the second place finisher will win a free entry to the IYC.

Refunds: Refunds must be requested via email to info@silverstatechess.org prior to 11:59pm on March 22nd and will have a processing fee of $12 withheld.

Byes: Maximum one (1) half point bye is available upon request. Half-point byes must be requested by 12:00pm on April 19th and will be irrevocable after that time. If any player is unable to play any round for any reason, including withdrawals, please notify a tournament director or score keeper. 

Teams: Two or more players from the same school in the same section automatically form a team. 

Snacks: 
No food will be provided. Competitors are encouraged to bring water bottles, which can be used in the playing area and snacks, which can be consumed outside of the playing area between rounds.

Schedule: Welcome and announcements will begin at 12:00pm. All players should be seated for Round 1 start at 12:15pm. Subsequent rounds start about 15 minutes after the previous round ends. There will be a lunch break for players to eat player-brought lunches. Players registering after 12:00pm may not be paired for round 1.

A US Chess Rated Tournament in 6 Sections open to Northern Nevada residents or Northern Nevada students in the counties listed above.

K-3 Championship (Open to all players in grades K – 3)

Players must reside in Nevada in one of the following counties and have their eligible address on file with USCF: Washoe, Humbolt, Elko, Pershing, Storey, Churchill, Lander, Eureka, White Pine, Lyon, Douglas, Mineral and the independent city of Carson City.


Southern Nevada residents should register for the Southern Nevada State Seniors Championship in a separate tournament.

Round 1: Friday March 6 @ 6:00 pm
Round 2: Saturday March 7 @ 12:00 pm
Round 3: Saturday March 7 @ 5:00 pm
Round 4: Sunday March 8 @ 12:00 pm

 Top three winners advance to the State Championship to compete against top three winners from Southern NV in a proctored online tournament to be held at the Mathewson Bridge Center on April 24-26.

Please bring boards, sets, and clocks as none are provided.

$1000.00 with 20 paid players:
Top Prize:  $500 + Trophy
Second:    $350 + Trophy
Third: $150 + Trophy
Top U1900: Trophy
Top U1600: Trophy

Above cash prizes adjusted proportionally for more or fewer players.

Note: Cash prizes will be awarded following the completion of the Nevada State Seniors Championship on April 26. To receive a cash prize in the Northern NV Championship, players must play in the Nevada State Seniors Championship. If a player is unable or unwilling to play in the online Nevada State Seniors Championship, entry and cash prize will be offered to the next highest scoring player.

The winner of the Nevada State Seniors Championship will represent Nevada in the John T. Irwin Tournament of Senior State Champions on August 3-6 (TBD) in Grand Rapids, MI. Silver State Chess will provide a travel stipend of $650 upon completion of the Irwin with no forfeited games.

Maximum number of entries: 40. Registration not confirmed until payment received.
Waitlist will start if/when max entries received.

: $99 by March 5, $115 later. 
Refunds: may be requested prior to start of Round 1. $15 withheld for processing fees
Entrants may register in person and pay with cash or check at the Reno Chess Club on Thursday evenings 6-9pm before March 6 @ 8:00pm.

Call for Nominations: Board of Directors – 2025 Election

The Silver State Chess Association (SSCA) is now accepting nominations for four (4) Director positions on its Board of Directors. These positions will be filled through an election in 2025. The following seats are open:

  • Two (2) Directors representing Southern Nevada
  • One (1) Director representing Northern Nevada
  • One (1) At-Large Director

Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for nomination, individuals must meet all of the following criteria:

  1. Be at least 18 years old
  2. Be a current member in good standing of the United States Chess Federation (USCF)
  3. Reside in the state of Nevada and have a Nevada mailing address:
    • Southern Nevada Directors must reside in Clark, Nye, Lincoln, or Esmeralda counties
    • Northern Nevada Directors must reside in Washoe, Humboldt, Elko, Pershing, Storey, Churchill, Lander, Eureka, White Pine, Lyon, Douglas, or Mineral counties, or in Carson City
    • At-Large Directors may reside in any part of Nevada

Nomination Process
Eligible individuals may nominate themselves or be nominated by others. Each nomination must include:

  • Full name of the nominee
  • County of residence and the seat being sought (Southern NV, Northern NV, or At-Large)
  • USCF ID number
  • A statement confirming the nominee meets all eligibility criteria

Election Process
The election will take place shortly after the nomination period ends. Ballots will be distributed to eligible voting members via mail or email.

Term of Office
Elected Directors will serve a term of two (2) years.

We encourage all qualified individuals who are passionate about promoting chess in Nevada to consider serving on the SSCA Board.
